Edelweiss's maiden flight bathed in the Midnight Sun
It was a beautiful summer evening as the maiden flight of Edelweiss between Zurich and North Iceland landed in Akureyri. The flight was the first in a series over a seven-week period as the airline looks to extend the period for 2024 in addition to scheduled flights to Keflavík airport.
The Midnight Sun was out, the weather was calm and the passengers looked very excited to be in North Iceland as they stepped out on the tarmac and headed for the terminal. There, they were offered pancakes and coffee as is tradition at Akureyri International Airport when airlines make their maiden flights.
In a statement released by Edelweiss when the flights were announced, the airline said it hopes to strengthen tourism in North Iceland. The offer of two gateways to the country is important.
"By offering this flight to AEY, we hope to be able to provide tourists from Switzerland with an even easier way of getting to the north of the country. Thanks to our 4 weekly flights to KEF, there are ways to combine flights. The passengers will be able to fly to AEY and fly home from KEF (or vice versa), which creates many different possibilities for planning a vacation suited to their individual needs. Our plans for the future are to extend the season to June – September. Once we have made that successful, we’ll see how we continue from there,” it says in a statement from Edelweiss.
