Kontiki offers winter trips with direct flights from Zurich to Akureyri

The Swiss travel agency Kontiki, is now offering travel packages to North Iceland in February and March 2024. These trips will include direct flights from Zurich to Akureyri.

Kontiki and Visit North Iceland have been working together on projects for sustainable tourism development. In May 2022 a seminar was held in Akureyri with the local tourism companies and Kontiki participating. This work has now resulted in Kontiki offering winter trips to North Iceland.

In a statement from Kontiki, the agency says it aims to extend the length of stay of visitors and promote year-round tourism. 

Kontiki is committed to the sustainable development of the Nordic countries and is actively involved in shaping their tourism. To ensure that it does not remain just a vision, we have initiated a sustainable tourism development project in North Iceland together with Visit North Iceland. The focus of the project is on establishing the region as a destination in its own right. The aim is to extend the length of stay and promote year-round tourism – for locals and visitors.

With the participation of the local population, workshops and a forum were held to develop a common vision as well as concrete steps for action. These range from charging stations for electric cars, visitor guidelines and a responsible approach to animals and nature to better networking and coordination of touristic highlights. The latter has the greatest leverage effect. The idea includes the establishment and expansion of thematic regional priorities. Emphasis is placed on the added value that the region has to offer to locals and guests. Building on this, it is possible to develop sustainable tourism offers and make them flourish.

Kontiki believes in the potential of this fascinating, rugged, authentic and beautiful region by offering a weekly direct flight from Switzerland to Akureyri for the winter months of February and March 2024.
