The Arctic Coast Way is officially open

The Arctic Coast Way in North Iceland was launched on the World Ocean Day, 8th of June 2019, with official ceremonies on each of the starting and ending point, Bakkafjörður in the Northeast and Hvammstangi in the Northwest.

The Arctic Coast Way in North Iceland was launched on the World Ocean Day, 8th of June 2019, with official ceremonies on each of the starting and ending point, Bakkafjörður in the Northeast and Hvammstangi in the Northwest. Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, the minister of transport and local government and Arnheiður Jóhannsdóttir, managing director of Visit North Iceland cut the ribbon in Hvammstangi. At Bakkafjörður, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, the president of the parliament and Árni Bragi Njálsson from the local municipality council cut the ribbon.

 

At the same time, brand new signs were introduced that indicate to travelers when they are on the Arctic Coast Way. These signs are colored brown, the color which is recognized internationally for tourism road signs. It’s the first time that such signs are put up in Iceland, and it marks a major milestone in the service provided to travelers when they tour around Iceland.

On the opening day, locals invited peoples to join in on hikes, coastal cleanups, BBQs at different coasts, concerts and much more. For those who want to discover unspoiled landscapes in the spirit of pioneers, this day marks the start of an exciting ongoing development process of this touring route which already offers an extraordinary off-the-beaten-track adventure along the northern perimeter of Iceland.
