Very successful first direct flight from the UK to Akureyri

Today at Akureyri Airport a Boeing 737-800 from Enter Air landed for the first time, full of passengers from Cardiff, Wales. These passengers were the first to fly directly from the UK to Akureyri, that was recently selected as the number one place to visit in 2018 by The Guardian. The travel agency Super Break is responsible for the flights to Akureyri from 11 different locations and 14 flights in total, from January to February. Super Break is already planning flights next winter, increasing the number up to 22 flights to start with.

Today at Akureyri Airport a Boeing 737-800 from Enter Air landed for the first time, full of passengers from Cardiff, Wales. These passengers were the first to fly directly from the UK to Akureyri, that was recently selected as the number one place to visit in 2018 by The Guardian. The travel agency Super Break is responsible for the flights to Akureyri from 11 different locations and 14 flights in total, from January to February. Super Break is already planning flights next winter, increasing the number up to 22 flights to start with.

The travelers were happy to land in Akureyri and were greeted with Icelandic water on bottles and homemade pancakes made the Icelandic way. Super Break has already sold over 95% of the available seats, which exceeded expectations.

The Icelandic captain greeted passengers in Cardiff

Aron Einar Gunnarsson, the captain of the Icelandic football national team and player for Cardiff Football Club, greeted the passengers at Cardiff Airport. He told them all about the Beer Spa in Arskogssandur, but Aron is one of the owners of the company. A trip to the spa is available to all of the travelers with Super Break.

„Should not be taken for granted“

At Akureyri Airport the Minister of Tourism, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir welcomed the passengers as they made their way from the aircraft to the terminal. Earlier she had given a speech at a small reception, saying that these flights would be a major boost for tourism in North Iceland and that the whole community would benefit.

„This direct flight we are seeing here today is something that should not be taken for granted.  It's the result of the belief of the people here in the north that direct international flights to and from Akureyri can work, at any time of the year,“ said Gylfadóttir.

„This flight is only the beginning“

The CEO of Visit North Iceland, Arnheiður Jóhannsdóttir, was happy to finally see this become reality. „We have been working towards this goal from the time Air 66N was founded in 2011, and have worked tirelessly to promote North Iceland to foreign tour agencies and airlines. This direct flight is only the beginning and we will see an increase in the number of these flights to Akureyri. This success is the result of the collaboration between tourism companies and municipalities in North Iceland, who have had the unfaltering belief that North Iceland is a destination that is both desirable and exciting,“ said Jóhannsdóttir.
