New airline based in Akureyri
A new airline, Niceair, has been founded in Akureyri and will start operating international flights in June. The name is a reference to North Iceland as the company aims to bring travelers there as well as offer outbound flights for the locals to destinations in the UK, Denmark, and Spain.
In the coming weeks, ticket sales are set to begin according to a press release from the airline.
"The foundation of Niceair comes in the wake of two years of research, in cooperation with foreign and local parties," says managing director Þorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson. Flights will be operated year-round, creating opportunities for short and long visits to North Iceland in all seasons.
The airline's UK Country Manager, Chris Hagan, spoke to Travel Weekly about this new startup.
I know first-hand, having spent a huge amount of time in North Iceland, just how fantastic the tourism offering is. Previous customer feedback was universally positive and I look forward to these new routes allowing more guests to experience what is a unique destination.
