North Iceland by Roger Kinder and Fatmustard Films
In early December, Roger Kinder and his wife came to Akureyri in North Iceland with easyJet from London Gatwick. Roger is a filmmaker and sent a video from the trip to Visit North Iceland, along with a short story about his travel. Read it below the video.

"My wife & I have wanted to visit Akureyri for years but found getting there wasn’t easy. No direct flights from the UK, expensive internal flights and inconvenient timetables meant for a time-consuming and demanding journey.
THEN. We discovered that easyJet had started a direct flight to Akureyri from London Gatwick. Living in the north of England meant a drive of between four & five hours to get there, but hey – this is a direct flight, and this is our opportunity.
So, a December morning saw us seamlessly through Gatwick departures and on the punctual EasyJet to Akureyri. The sunrise chased us north, and when the clouds cleared over Iceland, we looked down on one of the most magnificent vistas I’ve ever seen. A snow-covered Vatnajökull National Park with the glow from the rising sun glinting down on it. Absolutely breathtaking.
Upon arrival at the airport, we hopped on the airport bus and rode into town. Steam fog rose from the fjord, and the surrounding mountains gleamed in the light. It all looked so spectacular.
We explored Akureyri on foot and found it a friendly & welcoming town, a blend of the traditional and the modern. The old town is steeped in interesting history, and the newer part has all the shops, bars and restaurants. The homemade Icelandic soups are perfect winter warmers.
Across the fjord from Akureyri is the Forest Lagoon Spa. It's a really relaxing treat, and never mind the external temperature. It doesn’t matter how cold it is out of the water!
A visit to the spectacular Godafoss & Lake Myvatn area was fantastic. The lava formations at Dimmuborgir are impressive, but unfortunately, we missed the Yule Lads. They were clearly out stealing something somewhere!
I could go on – Skútustaðagígar, the Grjótagjá cave, the Krafla fissure…
The Akureyri area keeps on giving. The landscape and geology are amazing, and the scenery is fantastic. We were lucky enough to see humpback whales in the fjord, too.
There is so much more we would have liked to see and do. We’d come back at the first chance."
