The autumn colours are at their absolute best in September, so it is the ideal time to enjoy them. This is the time to driving to all the beautiful natural highlights along the Diamond Circle. Experience the colors in Ásbyrgi national park, easy hike to Waterfall Dettifoss and waterfall Goðafoss. Take whale watching tours from Húsavík and not to mention explore Lake Mývatn and surroundings with lava formations, red and yellow colors all around. And to make it all perfect, the Northern lights might start dancing above you.
What to expect
Keep in mind that the weather can change quickly so it is important to keep up with the weather forecast and driving conditions. In September, farmers round up their sheep from the highlands so keep an eye out for herds of sheep. It can be both windy and rainy so be sure to pack appropriate outerwear. Autumn equinox is on the 22nd or 23rd of September.
